Security CCTV used to monitor bus driver performance

Security CCTV cameras are being used to monitor the driving performances of drivers on Metro buses in Washington DC.

Metro is installing a camera system worth $3 million in a bid to improve driver quality and avoid "preventable" accidents, according to the Examiner.

Known as the DriveCam system, the cameras will take 16 seconds of audio and video footage every time a driver brakes or accelerates suddenly.

Both the road and the driver will be recorded.

Spokesman Reggie Woodruff said told the news provider: "We want to eliminate all poor driving habits.

"If it's determined by the data that a driver does a lot of short stops and fast accelerations, which is disruptive to customers and affects fuel economy, we want to eliminate that."

The 16 seconds of footage will consist of the 12 seconds prior to an incident and the four seconds immediately after.
