A school transport provider in Dubai is fitting its buses with CCTV cameras to tighten up security and ensure the safety of its passengers.

School Transport Services (STS) will use the technology on more than 1,000 vehicles in its fleet, the Khaleej Times reported.

Colonel ML Augustine, the company's managing director, told the newspaper that an order had already been placed for the cameras and the professional CCTV recorders that will accompany them.

He also confirmed that installation work would begin immediately, but added that the project is likely to take more than a year to complete given the large number of buses involved.

Mr Augustine said the cameras will record entire bus journeys onto DVR recorders inside the vehicles and insisted that all of the equipment will be vandal-proof to avoid tampering.

STS provides transport for more than 48,000 students in 24 Dubai schools. Its vehicles are already equipped with GPS tracking technology, which allows their movements to be monitored.
