Campaigners win fight for security CCTV at Walkden station

Campaigners have won their fight to have security CCTV cameras installed at Walkden station in Manchester.

Campaign group the Friends of Walkden Station have been battling to have the surveillance cameras installed for three years, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Following lengthy negotiations with Northern Rail, the transport group has agreed to install the units within the next month.

Demands for the cameras were made after a number of undesirable incidents took place, including vandalism, theft and arson.

Peter Aust, chair of Friends of Walkden Station, said that the decision was a much-needed positive boost.

He told the news provider: "We have had our share of bad news concerning the station over the past months so we certainly welcome the good news of the installation of CCTV, our short-listing for the ACoRP Best Station Adoption Group and Best Community Rail Marketing Event awards."

The cameras set to be installed in the next month will be temporary units until permanent ones are put in place.
