Mobile security CCTV units used in New South Wales, Australia are to be given an orange stripe so that motorists can identify them.

The markings are to be added after the state government was challenged by motorists and the opposition to implement a colour system so as to make the units more visible.

Minister for Roads, David Borger, said the government was willing to listen to public sentiment and implement the changes, particularly as evidence shows there is a ''marginal benefit'' in unmarked cars.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald: ''When there is a marking, some people will slow down just for that section and then speed up again, but the benefit of these cameras overall is they suppress limits across the entire network and they are very successful at doing that."

A total of six of the "safety camera vehicles" will be marked with the orange and white stripes.
