Asia was the world's biggest market for video surveillance systems last year, representing 48 per cent of global spending on CCTV, new research shows.

According to RNCOS's Global CCTV Market Analysis (2008-2012) report, Asia was followed by the Americas and Europe.

The research highlighted the growing demand for security surveillance systems in China, India, Singapore and Taiwan, all of which are serving to drive the region's CCTV market.

It highlighted residential security, public place security, workplace security and security of supply chains as the four areas in which video surveillance systems play a key role.

RNCOS also claimed that the US and European markets are reaching maturity now, while there is potential for further growth potential in Asia.

"However, IP based surveillance systems have yet to grow as the video surveillance market is undergoing a transition phase from analogue video to IP video," it concluded.

The report indicated that technology manufacturers are offering more intelligent features with their products to drive demand for IP cameras – features such as image recognition, image tracking and response and alert.
